Pronunciation: Brit. /ˌbʌstə ˈbraʊn/,  U.S. /ˈˌbəstər ˈbraʊn/
Etymology: <  Buster Brown, the name of a boy comic-strip character whose stereotypically innocent appearance contrasted with his disruptive behaviour.

The character was created by Richard Felton Outcault (1863–1928), U.S. cartoonist, in 1902.

1.  attrib. Designating a style of dress, or an item of clothing, reminiscent of the attire of Buster Brown. Chiefly in Buster Brown suit, Buster Brown collar.
The suit worn by the comic-strip character was of an affected style, with knee-length trousers worn with high socks, a wide white collar worn on the outside of a long jacket, and a flamboyant cravat. Cf. Fauntleroy n.

1902 Manitoba Free Press 4 June 4/6  (advt.) Boys' wash suits. These in Buster Brown and sailor blouse style in sizes from 2½ years to 7.

1903 Paducah(Kentucky)Sun 25 Sept. 1/1  (advt.) We have secured the exclusive agency for the celebrated Buster Brown suits.

1904 World(N.Y.) 12 Feb. 11/5  (advt.) Buster Brown collar Russian blouse suits.

1946  E. Merriam Family Circle 38 Neck would be noosed in by Buster Brown collar now.

1976 Ebony Jr. Dec. 42/1 He wore his Lord Fauntleroy suit with Buster Brown collar.

1993  J. E. B. Breslin Mark Rothko ix. 262 When Rothko had actually arrived from the Pale, he had felt humiliated dressed up in a Dvinsk version of a Buster Brown suit, as if disgraced by bourgeois respectability.

1922 Boot & Shoe Recorder 18 Nov. 135/2 Her ‘daddy’ boosts for ‘Buster Brown’, so it was very logical that the young lady should insist that her first pair of shoes..should be Buster Browns.

1975  J. C. Thomas Chasin' Trane (1976) 11 They dug their Buster Brown shoes into the grass and scratched out a fresh chunk of ground for the bases.

2007  C. Tudish Amer. Cream 131 Ida had on cotton ankle socks and her usual walking shoes, brown leather lace-ups that reminded Virginia of her own Buster Browns.

 3.  Hairdressing. A hairstyle that resembles that of Buster Brown; a bob or pageboy cut. Usu. attrib.

1904 San Francisco Chron. 27 Nov. 5/3 It was one of those ‘Buster Brown’ hair cuts, chopped off with an ax all around on a line with the bottom of the ears.

1944  S. Bellow Dangling Man 75 She took me to the barber and had him cut my hair after the fashion of the time, in what was called a Buster Brown.

1995  ‘J. Churchill’ From Here to Paternity xx. 197 She had a blond Buster Brown hairdo, ornamented with a big bow.

2007  F. Michaels Hide & Seek xvi. 136 You have the perfect face for a Buster Brown bob.
