DEFINITION

noun

Any of a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the sameratio as water (2:1) and typically can be broken down to release energy in the animal body.





In food science and in many informal contexts, the term carbohydrate often means any food that is particularly rich in the complex carbohydrate starch (such as cerealsbread, and pasta) orsimple carbohydrates, such as sugar (found in candyjams, and desserts).
Carbohydrates are often found in many energy bars and isotonics due to the energy that is contained.
