Phonetics: /tʃ/

Share it Please
In British English the phonetic symbol /tʃ/ corresponds to the initial consonant sound in words like "check", and the final one in "catch". It is a voiceless consonant.

Initial pronunciation of /tʃ/

  • chair - challenge - champion - change - charge - chat - cheat - check - cheese - chess;

Final pronunciation of /tʃ/

  • batch - catch - each - sketch - switch - teach - watch - which;

Pronunciation of /tʃ/ in "mid"-position

  • butcher - feature - future - picture - teacher;

Others

  • church;

Homophones

  • check/cheque.

While /tʃ/ exists in Spanish, many students will "hear" this sound in words like orange or judge, i.e. without considerable practice, they'll mistake it for /dʒ/, a sound which doesn't exist in Spanish.
